Choosing Lawyers in Germany
Legal advice in Germany is reserved to an admitted Rechtsanwalt (attorney). To use the title you must pass two state law examinations, then be admitted to a regional bar (Rechtsanwaltskammer) and remain subject to the Federal Lawyers’ Act (Bundesrechtsanwaltsordnung, BRAO) and the professional code (BORA). Only an admitted Rechtsanwalt may represent you before German courts and authorities.
Before you engage one: confirm admission with the relevant bar association (via BRAK), check the practice area actually matches your matter (corporate and commercial, employment, IP, disputes are distinct specialisms in Germany), and confirm the working language and whether a Fachanwalt (certified specialist) title applies.
