Choosing Accountants in Portugal
Portugal is unusual in that most companies are legally required to have a certified accountant. A Contabilista Certificado, registered with the Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados, signs off a company's accounts and tax filings — so this is not an optional service but a statutory role, and that registration is the credential to confirm.
Statutory audit is separate: auditors are registered with the Ordem dos Revisores Oficiais de Contas (OROC), with oversight by the CMVM. For most small companies the certified accountant is the key relationship; confirm they can also handle the IRC (corporate tax) and IVA (VAT) filings your business will owe.
