Accountants handle statutory bookkeeping, annual accounts, payroll and the filings your company owes its registry and tax authority. Some also sign statutory audits, which is a separate and more tightly controlled activity in most jurisdictions.

How this is regulated in Portugal
Certified accountants belong to the Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados and hold the Contabilista Certificado title. Statutory audit is separate: auditors are registered with the Ordem dos Revisores Oficiais de Contas, with public oversight by the CMVM.
Portuguese companies are recorded in the Registo Comercial, operated by the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado.
What to check before you engage a firm
- Ask whether they are licensed to sign a statutory audit, or only to prepare accounts. These are usually different credentials.
- Check they have handled companies owned from abroad, since non-resident ownership changes the reporting and often the banking requirements.
- Agree in writing who files what, and by when. Missed statutory deadlines carry penalties that fall on the company, not the adviser.
