Choosing Tax Advisors in Portugal
There is no protected title or dedicated regulator for tax consultants in Portugal. In practice tax work is done by a certified accountant (Contabilista Certificado), who can also represent clients before the tax authority, or by a lawyer specialising in tax. So the credential to look for is one of those two, not a generic "tax adviser" label.
For internationally mobile individuals and businesses the relevant questions are the current incentive regimes (Portugal's tax landscape for newcomers has changed), cross-border and treaty issues, and who will actually file and represent you before the Autoridade Tributária.
