Choosing Lawyers in UAE (Dubai)
The UAE draws a line most countries do not: a licensed advocate (who may appear in UAE courts) is distinct from a legal consultant (who may advise but not appear), and most expatriate lawyers in Dubai are legal consultants. For court representation you need an advocate; for contracts, structuring and advice, a consultant is normal.
There is also a jurisdiction split: onshore matters sit under UAE federal and emirate law, while DIFC and ADGM apply English common law through their own courts and keep their own registers of legal practitioners. Establish which system your matter falls under, and confirm the individual's registration with the relevant body (the Dubai Legal Affairs Department onshore, or the DIFC/ADGM register). For routine trade-licence work a setup consultancy will cost far less; bring in a law firm when the matter is genuinely contractual, regulatory or contentious.
Regulator: Dubai advocates register with the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department; DIFC and ADGM keep their own registers of legal practitioners. Official source. Checked 19 July 2026.
