Solicitors in England and Wales are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and barristers by the Bar Standards Board. Scotland and Northern Ireland are separate legal jurisdictions with their own bodies, so check which one a firm practises in — it matters for where your contracts and disputes are governed.
Confirm the individual solicitor's status on the SRA register, and match the practice area to your matter (corporate, employment, IP, disputes are distinct). For routine company formation an AML-supervised agent is far cheaper; a law firm is for genuine legal work.
