Choosing Accountants in United Kingdom
"Accountant" is not a protected title in the UK — anyone may use it — so the credential matters more than the label. Statutory audit is reserved: only a Registered Auditor may sign one, and that status is checkable on a public register. For everything short of audit, look for membership of a recognised body: ICAEW, ACCA or ICAS.
Most small UK companies are audit-exempt, so for accounts, VAT and Corporation Tax the question is chartered/certified membership and experience with your situation (a contractor's IR35 position is very different from a growing company's). Confirm who actually signs your filings.
Regulator: 'Accountant' not protected; statutory audit reserved to a Registered Auditor; ICAEW/ACCA/ICAS membership. Official source. Checked 19 July 2026.
