Choosing Tax Advisors in United Kingdom
Tax advice is not a licensed activity in the UK and there is no statutory regulator for it. The most common credential to look for is the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) designation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation, a voluntary professional body, or an accountancy qualification (ICAEW/ACCA) with tax specialism.
For an international business the useful questions are whether the adviser handles cross-border issues (double-tax treaties, transfer pricing, permanent establishment), and whether they can deal with HMRC on your behalf. Be wary of anyone promising a specific tax outcome before seeing your figures.
Regulator: No statutory regulator for tax advice; CIOT's Chartered Tax Adviser is the common credential. Official source. Checked 19 July 2026.
